Elevate Your Ethnic Festive Style: Tips to Glamorize Simple Garments

At this juncture in our lives, where fashion takes centre stage in our lifestyle, amidst a flurry of festivals and occasions, it's the perfect time to infuse some sparkle into your wardrobe. While opulent traditional outfits shine during this season, there's an art to transforming simple garments into stunning ensembles. I'm Alexandra-Faye, a designer and stylist with a passion for fusion fashion. Join me as I share my top tips on styling simple garments for festivities and various occasions. Together, let's illuminate the fashion scene with a touch of elegance and creativity.

  1. Lavish Layering: Start with a basic piece like a plain kurta or a simple saree. Then, add layers of luxury. Opt for an intricately embroidered jacket, an embellished cape, or a statement dupatta. The layers not only provide warmth during the cool evenings but also elevate your outfit to a whole new level of sophistication.
  2. Statement Accessories: Accessories are the key to transforming any outfit. Invest in statement jewellery, such as oversized jhumkas, chunky necklaces, or ornate cuffs. These accessories instantly infuse glamour into your look, even if your clothing is understated.
  3. Drape It Differently: If you're donning a simple saree, experiment with unique draping styles. Try the classic "butterfly drape," the trendy "belted drape," or even a fusion of two different sarees to create a contemporary look. Play with pleats, folds, and pallu placements to add drama to your outfit.
  4. Glimmering Fabrics: Opt for fabrics that shimmer and shine. Silks, chiffons, georgettes, and organzas with metallic accents or subtle sequins can transform even the simplest attire into an occasion-worthy ensemble. Choose colours that resonate with the festival, like deep reds, royal blues, or rich emerald greens. Sequins and glitter is making its way back for the season too and is perfect for evening festivities!
  5. Mix and Match: Combine contrasting elements to create a captivating ensemble. Pair a plain blouse with a heavily embroidered skirt or vice versa, or a heavily embroidered dupatta with a simple kurta or mix prints for a playful look. This allows you to express your unique style while still honouring traditional aesthetics. Mixing different textures and styles can add depth and intrigue to your overall look. Play around with colours as well, using contrast colours can add a lot of fun to your look!
  6. Embrace Traditional Elegance: Our festivities are all about embracing our rich cultural heritage, so dive into the treasure trove of traditional wear. Choose from a stunning array of sarees, lehengas, or anarkalis in vibrant colours like royal blue, emerald green, and deep maroon.
  7. Men's Ethnic Chic: Gentlemen, Diwali is your time to shine as well! Opt for well-fitted kurta-pyjamas or kurtas paired with straight pants. Experiment with rich, jewel-toned colours and add a touch of sophistication with embroidered, or quirky jackets. Don't forget to accessorise with traditional mojaris or juttis.

Bonus pointers :

  1. Confidence is Key: Remember, it's not just about the clothes but also about how you carry them. Confidence is your best accessory. Walk with grace, and let your inner light shine through, making your outfit truly spectacular.
  2. Personal Touch: Finally, infuse your own personality into your ensemble. Whether it's a favourite family heirloom, a unique piece of jewellery, or a fragrance that evokes nostalgia, incorporating personal elements can make your outfit deeply meaningful. I always suggest adding a bit of yourself to your look to make it even more special.
